Daedelus and Winsor McKay
These beautiful eye-catching and wistful cartoon images cover the album of Californian electro musician and DJ, Daedelus.
Back when album covers were as important as song writing and became a major part of your bedroom identity...an album like this would be probably be postered all over adolescent walls and attract new listeners daily - if only it were available to buy on supermarket shelves.
As it turns out - it's not the brainchild of a frustrated graphic artist...but the rescued drawings of classic American cartoon artist Winsor McKay. Little Nemo in Slumberland and his land of Wonderful dreams adorned the pages of American newspapers in the early twentieth century. Each night, Nemo would wake from a psychedelic dream to his great relief, but to the reader's disappointment, the dream would end.
Unfortunately the artist was destined for political satire by the corporate news giant who employed him, and in the end his cartoon opus was forgotten next to Super Man and other lo-fi sci-fi adventures. Japanese Anime Director Hayao Miyazaki is hugely influenced by his style and made an incredible pilot of a film based on Nemo's adventures. But it was never completed until an American company took on the idea in 2002.
Collections of the original cartoons are available to buy online, and in next month's issue we interview Daedelus about his choice of album cover and more. |
